Its founding date back to 1993, when WKO (World Union of Karate-Do Organizations) and ITKF (International Traditional Karate Federation) merged to form today's WKF.

Every 2 years, the umbrella organization organizes the Karate World Championships and supports the athletes with innovations - the main focus is always on increasing safety.
