Boxing Rings
Boxing rings: the round thing with the colorful corners.
Why a boxing ring is still called a ring despite its distinctive four corners goes back to the beginnings of boxing. It was pretty simple before boxing became a national sport and athletes became idols through worldwide TV broadcasts. Street fights know no fixed limits. Instead, the onlookers formed a ring around the fighters in the middle. Even when the square fighting area was introduced with the reform of the Prize Ring Rules in 1838, the “boxing ring” continued to be the designation. To this day, a ring is not always automatically a round thing but also designates the competition area in boxing.
