Do you've also ever wondered why boxing gloves are bent? We will enlighten you and look deep inside your boxing gloves.
Whether you're a real softie or a muscle man, the padding of boxing gloves determines the characteristics of your safety equipment. As in real life, the inner values count in the safety concept of boxing gloves. Basically, most boxing gloves in amateur boxing are filled with foam. There is either a one-piece blank made of spray foam under the cover or a combination of several foam panels. The latter is also often referred to as sandwich foam. Boxing gloves with a core made of sandwich foam usually only get their shape in the glove cover, while the molded parts assume the typical boxing position as blanks. The padding is the padding that is inside your boxing gloves and can be structured differently. Horsehair, which was initially used as padding, is rarely used on its own today. Sometimes you can find a layer of horsehair supporting the molded foam in boxing gloves of the professional leagues.
Sure, from a distance, all boxing gloves look the same. But as soon as you have one or two models in your hand, you realize that it's not quite that simple. Broad striking surfaces, an extended shaft, or a wrist control system are different boxing gloves from each other. But what are all these unique selling propositions, and who needs them? Let's start with a broad face. The area is unmistakably larger here, making it easier to hit, and your cover is disproportionately high. Beginners, in particular, shouldn't be tempted because the wider padding means hits can be felt immediately - knock out possible. If you find the abbreviation XLP with us, it is an extra-long-padded model. The padding is extended and ends in the shaft above the wrist. With more stability on the hands, twisting is consistently prevented. Many boxers like to enjoy this added safety in daily training to avoid wrist strain. The wrist control system also provides additional protection for the wrist. However, the shaft is not significantly extended here, but the zone around the wrist is secured with a pad made of foam or gel.
What is actually behind the abbreviations IMF, PPS, or MLP, and what do they say about your boxing gloves' padding and protective performance? IMF stands for Injection-Molded-Foam, an injection-molded foam that is injected into a mold under high pressure and hardens. The foam blank is already in the typical boxing pose and only needs to be sewn into the leather or imitation leather cover later. It is similar to PPS, the Professional Protection System. This foam is comparable to the IMF foam blanks in the manufacturing method. Still, the raw materials for manufacturing the material come from Germany, which means that PPS foam is ISO 9001 certified. MLP, on the other hand, is constructed as multi-layer padding in a completely different way. Foam panels with different properties are glued together and then cut out. Multi-layer foams only get the typical curvature in the cover. They are usually lighter, which means they show a lot of hardness and are more likely to be used by experienced boxing athletes. An exception in the sandwich foams is the “4Select” boxing glove available in our shop. Here, an IMF injection-molded blank is then covered with several foam panels, which means that the “4Select” boxing gloves have high stability and excellent damping properties.
After the inner workings of your boxing gloves are in place, they still need a protective cover. Like your skin, it protects everything underneath from damage and premature wear. Thanks to innovative manufacturing methods, there are hardly any noticeable differences in genuine and artificial leather functions. Whether natural or synthetic is more of a personal decision. However, some associations set requirements for competitive athletes in their regulations. In addition to standardized ounce weight, the cover and color of the boxing gloves are also specified (for example, IBA: 10 ounces, genuine leather cover, glove color red or blue).
We've moved through the construction of boxing gloves this far from the inside out. What is missing now? The closure, of course, which keeps the gloves securely on your hands. Here the selection is not large but clearly distinguishable from each other. Boxing gloves with a strong hook and loop fastener are the most common. Along cuff further supports the stabilization performance and allows individual width adjustment. Boxing gloves with hook and loop fasteners are widespread in popular and amateur sports. On the other hand, professional leagues require an extremely high level of security. As a result, mitts with a lacing system are increasingly used here. Step by step, the fit can be matched to the wearer. However, lace-up gloves cannot be put on alone. A second trusted person is responsible for the professional closing and subsequent masking.
