The original Tanto is a Japanese combat knife that is slightly curved and features a single-edged blade. Samurai used to carry it alongside a long sword so they could use a precision weapon in close combat. However, even back then, people preferred to use a wooden replica for training purposes to avoid serious injuries. Even today, Tanto short swords are part of the equipment for various martial arts, such as Aikido, and are often used as simulation weapons in self-defense training.

In the past, people often used natural objects to determine measurements, which is how the Japanese unit of measurement known as the shaku came into being. The distance between two nodes on a bamboo stalk was called a shaku. This unit of measurement is still in use in Japan today, though it has since been standardized to a length of exactly 303.03 mm.
