Description / Bo staff (rattan)
A weapon that isn’t really a weapon—the rattan Bo staff.
In early Japan, only the samurai warrior class was permitted to carry a weapon. However, since the common peasantry did not want to appear defenseless, they used everyday objects for their defense. Disguised as a walking stick or used to carry loads, the Bo staff could be taken anywhere inconspicuously. Due to its size, it was the perfect ranged weapon—to this day, a significant advantage over close-combat weapons such as swords or knives.
Techniques with the Bo staff.
You usually start with simple striking and thrusting techniques, which are practiced without a partner (Hitoribo). When handling the Bo, it’s important to quickly reposition your hands. This allows the staff to be set in motion with rotational movements at incredible speeds. When fighting with a partner—known as Kumibo—a battle is simulated; by this point, you should already have mastered your training weapon down to the finest detail.
The Ultimate Bo Test.
For fast movements with impressive rotations, your bo must not only be perfectly balanced but also straight. With proper storage and care, you protect your equipment from premature wear and tear and ensure a high level of safety. You can test for yourself at any time to see if your Bo is still straight by rolling it across a horizontal and as smooth a surface as possible. If you want to store your Bo properly, you’ll also find the matching weapon stand for staffs #845-9000 in our Onlineshop.
